Alexa.com is a great website for checking a websites traffic level. Alexa rank is based upon the amount of visitors a site gets from a browser with the Alexa toolbar installed.

Take a look at Alexa’s Definition Alexa’s Traffic Rank

The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources, and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.

The main Alexa traffic rank is based on a value derived from these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site’s current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.

Why Use Alexa Rank?

Webmasters, advertisers and ad networks look at a blog’s Alexa rank to determine the weight and worth of a site or link. When trying to monetize a website or even sell a link having a good Alexa rank will enable you to earn more money or open up better offers from advertisers.

My Alexa Rank

My blog craigdeakin.com is nearly 2 months old, and has gained steady traffic. The first time I checked my Alexa rank it was around 3 million, today it currently stands at just over 500,000 which im happy at the progress so far, hopefully it will continue to improve over time.

Tips For Improving Your Alexa Rank

  1. Install Toolbar – If you use Firefox you can find the Alexa toolbar through the addon menu, however you can download it from Alexa.com Once its installed, set your website or blog as your homepage.
  2. Tell Users – If you know some of your readers/visitors it would be worth telling them to install the toolbar, that way when they visitor your site they’re contributing to the Alexa rank of your site.
  3. Reviews and Ratings – Apparently having your site reviews on Alexa.com can contribute alot to your Alexa rank, so maybe you could ask some friends to leave you a review.

Great post! Up until the buying links part, please don’t do that! If you focus on making a great website, then people will link to it naturally :)

Going to go and check out this “claim” stuff now and see if I can get some reviews! Cheers for the insight

I appreciate the comment John :)

Im glad you pointed that out, I wouldn’t buy links myself but that’s always a way to go for some people who want quick success I guess.

Hey Craig thanks for mentioning my Alexa tips article in your blog. I can see you are making good progress as your Alexa rank is around 380k at the moment.

I am stucked at 160k for a few days now. It only means I’m nearing my blogs peak traffic. Need to do some improvement on my blog to gain more traffic and hopefully I can close in ont he 100k barrier.

Your welcome, I enjoyed the article alot.

Id love to know what improvements you have in mind for your blog, and if it works to imrpove your ranking!

If there is anything I can do, just let me know.

Well I’ve been busy for the last few days and I think I haven’t done anything to my blog and not consistent enough in posting articles.

I still like to tweak the theme a bit. It’s a free theme but its customizable. Maybe change the background color or the header maybe.

Now for Alexa, its all traffic so that means more commenting to other blogs especially those high traffic blogs.

Check this three blogs I regularly visit

extremejohn.com
blogengage.com
sitesketch101.com

I get traffic from there by just commenting and I also learned 90 percent of my blogging knowledge on those sites.

Thanks for those blog recommendations, I had never heard of them.

Ive also found commenting can be a good source of traffic, on relevant blogs that is. Ive been trying to do alot more of it.

Thanks for taking the time to carry on the conversation :)

Hey sorry for not getting back here sooner.

Did you visit those blogs I mentioned? I think I already I saw you made a comment in one of the blogs if I’m not mistaken.

My Alexa is still plating around 152k to 158k for the past 3 weeks but I’m posting more consistently now so I think it will improve in a few days time.

Thanks for returning!

I did visit those blogs, I think the more you post the more improvement you will see in the Alexa rank.

I find it hard and hard to improve on my Alexa ranking now. Its been almost a month and I’m not getting improvement from my 150k plus ranking.

I think I need more time for my blog. Right now, I only spend around an hour or so a day.

On the other hand, your at 305k now and improving fast. Sooner or later you will be knocking at my door :)

I’ve found that the most you post and the higher the traffic in a given period, the higher you will rank.

Keep at it!

I’m a little puzzled right now. My Wordpress Stats plug in says my traffic improves by at least 20 percent this week than last week. But my Alexa is still at 158k which I’m expecting at 145k.

Oh well…

I’m guessing the plugin is providing wrong results, it happens a lot especially with stat plugins.

However, I wouldn’t worry much about your alexa rank. In the scheme of things it doesn’t mean all that much, it can be useful for gathering some information but you shouldn’t use it to judge the overall success of your site.
